Soil carbon is now a farm business conversation.
In Australia, one Australian Carbon Credit Unit represents one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent, or 1 tonne CO₂-e, stored or avoided by an eligible project.
Soil carbon projects can earn ACCUs when measured increases in soil carbon are achieved under approved methods, with proper registration, baselines, reporting and verification.

On one supported beef cattle property in Northern NSW, soil improvement records showed approximately 660,000 tonnes over five years. If treated as tonnes of CO₂-e, that equals: 660,000 tonnes CO₂-e = 660,000 potential ACCU equivalents.
Average: 132,000 tonnes CO₂-e per year. At a recent generic ACCU spot reference of $37.50, that carbon value would represent a headline equivalent of:
660,000 x $37.50 = $24,750,000.
That is not a guaranteed cheque. Carbon credits require registration, baseline testing, soil measurement, audits, permanence obligations and compliance. But it shows why soil biology is no longer a side issue. It is productivity, water, land value and potential future carbon asset creation sitting under a farmer’s feet. A May 2026 market update reported generic ACCUs closing around $37.50.

In Science one gene carries the direction for making one protein and it is these proteins that control the movement of energy and materials throughout the plant during its growth.
Proteins such as Chlorophyll, enzymes and hormones are made up of amino acid chains. Among its other duties, the gene carries the list of amino acids that are bonded together to make the protein that it (the gene) represents.
There are only about twenty amino acids that are widely recognized, and the gene is extremely specific in the order and the inclusion of the various elements. To leave any out would result in a dysfunctional protein.
Optimum plant growth is possible only when all the essential elements are adequately supplied and in balance with each other.
Vigorous plant growth supported only by an excessive supply of N.P.K (particularly nitrogen) without the support of other minerals can lead to a depletion of minerals in the soil. If the depleted mineral is needed to produce a required amino acid, it follows that the protein will not be properly formed. Loosely speaking, this is where several the issues, such as shelf life, taste and plant health come from.

Worth noting perhaps is that while plants are not directly sensitive the pH of the soil, they are, in fact, sensitive to the effect of acidity on the availability and form of plant nutrients.
The pH is also a significant factor in determining the quantity and diversity of soil organisms. A neutral pH allowing greater diversity in this instance than say a pH of below 6(Acid).
